Artecnica Laptop Case Made from Recycled Billboards

We love it when design incorporates environmentally responsible principals. Such is the case with internationally recognized design company, Artecnica. Not only do we think their Design w/Conscience philosophy sexy but we simply love their products.

Case in point is this minimalist yet functional laptop case. The description is from Artecnica's site.

Sustainable billboard cases lined with neoprene comes in two sizes: 13" and 15" Crafted from 100% MAL/TBWA billboards and neoprene, this die cut case collection is designed to provide a soft laptop cover and a portable work station.

The exterior provides a protective shield while the neoprene lined inside surface helps prevent scratches on your shiny tech. When open it looks like the flaps act as a surface for an optical mouse. This is a beautiful replacement for the ho-hum laptop sleeve.

This is a new item for Spring/Summer 2010 so no pricing yet.

Apple's Tablet Gadget Officially Called iPad

So it's official @ 1:10 pm EST., Apple's latest gadget is called the iPad. We like iTablet or iSlate better. It's Apple's answer to the Tablet PC. It looks like a big iPhone and works like one too sans phone part. Apple iPad video here.

Last night on CNBC the CEO of McGraw-Hill let the cat out of the bag on Apple's big announcement today. He confirmed that Apple would be releasing a tablet device. As if the world didn't already know! Mr. Jobs has the final word so this could be a red herring? Nah! View video here.

A supposed image of what the tablet looks like also surfaced. It certainly is in line with the rumours that the tablet will be a much larger version of the iPhone/iPod Touch. We like!

Apple's "come see our creation" Event

Media outlets, fan boys and anyone who pretty much love Apple products are closely watching Jan. 27th. Why? They are waiting for Steve Jobs to announce the highly anticipated and speculated (many years now) Apple Tablet. As expected the name and details are hush hush but the most popular names are iTablet, iSlate or iPad from what we gather.

The other rumour is regarding the launch of a 4G iPhone that will work on Verizon Wireless's latest network later this year. Whatever it is, it's sure to send Apple stocks soaring.

Urbanears: 2 new colourful & stylish headphones

From the Scandinavian collective, Urbanears, comes 2 new headphones with classic 80's styling and a rainbow of colour choices.

Plattan is a full size pair of "cans" and can (no pun...) fold down to the size of your fist for portability. Besides the retro good looks and colour options, I really like the "zound plug" built into the earcap allowing for sharing via standard 3.5mm stereo plug. Spread the love!

Tanto uses the same technology but is designed to be more portable than the Plattan. Reminds me of the old Sony Walkman headphones....er, so I've read cuz I'm not that old! ;)

First Impressions: The ORB. Stylish & Dead Sexy Gadget

We often come across gadgets that are so geeky it's just cool and some that are sexy but not necessarily useful and often expensive. On the rare occasion we see something that's equally hi-tech, Dead Sexy and affordable.

From Hybra Advance Technology comes the ORB Wireless Earpiece Finger Ring aka the ORB. The ORB* is essentially a Bluetooth headset that transforms, literally, with a twist from a finger ring to a fully functioning BT headset.

How does it work?
The ORB uses piezo-electric Distributed Mode Actuator technology from NXT*. Huh? Simply put it harnesses NXT's bone conducting audio technology which delivers high-quality sound without having to place the device in-ear. The ORB is placed over the upper ear between the ear and side of head. The receiver end of the headset rests just above the jawbone.

Yes the ORB does sound like something out of Star Trek or TekWar TV series (yes I'm showing my Geek!) but don't worry it's not going to make you look like a sci-fi convention fan boy/girl. It's much too subtle and stylish. Think of it as Star Trek meets Sex and the City.

We wanted to checkout the ORB in person at CES 2010 but the working unit was off at a meeting with distributors. We can't wait to do a full review on the ORB. Until then checkout our review of current BT headsets on the market here.

Now This Burger is DIFFERENT

The burger craze in Toronto is getting a bit out of hand. How many more people are going to jump on the bandwagon? We have the Burger Shoppe, Craft Burger, Gourmet Burger Co. etc.. then recently Bamburger and Burger Bar. They're more or less the same thing..blah! Don't get me wrong, some of these are tasty burgers but not really that different in their offering.

In my recent trip to Singapore (click here to read the editorial) I came upon a new burger concept called R Burger. It's definitely nothing we have here in Canada or US for that matter. R Burger is a Japanese concept with locations in Singapore, Thailand and Japan. The location I went to is inside the beautiful shopping complex, Ion Orchard.

R Burger is about creating a healthy burger. Healthy burger? Isn't that an oxymoron? What makes them different? First off is the colour of the bun. It's white. R Burger has replaced the traditional baked bun with a white steamed version. Then on the majority of their burgers the lettuce has been substituted with shiso leaf. Shisho leaf is considered rich in minerals and vitamins. I'm sure their are other healthy changes they've made but you can read that on their site.

So how does it taste? I tried the Avocado Cheese Burger. It was delicious! The "albino" steamed bun was soft and fluffy. The meat patty was juicy and the sauce (demi-glace) was tasty without being overpowering. I could have eaten 2!

Oh did I forget to mention that one of the ingredients in the R Burger bun is marine collagen? Yup! As we've heard collagen reduces wrinkles and fine lines. Supposedly good for your skin.

I can just hear those aging Hollywood types clambering to get their fill now.

I cannot believe that its been 20 years. BERLIN is one of my most favourite cities in the world. It's fun, it's funky, it's grey and it's totally SexyUgly. It's also the place to be next week for all the celebrations for the FESTIVAL OF FREEDOM.

I wish I could be there, I really do, but we don't always get what we want...

I was personally lucky enough to be working in Europe in the nineties (oops just dated myself!) and got to see all the changes after the communists left all those years ago. It's seems so long, yet not long ago. Cannot explain. Back in those days there weren't too many digital cameras, so I don't have images from that era sadly.

Lots of articles are mentioning this little annoyance called OST-algie. Its where people become "nostalgic" for the era of spies, suspicion, bare store shelves and bad fashion. PULEESE. Anyone suffering from this sickness should move to Belarus or North Korea immediately and I guarantee they will be cured in less than 24 hours and then kiss my white Germanic ass..

Anywho, this Anniversary Event promises to be loads of fun, remembrance, tears and good old Berlin style partying! Word to the wise - Techno is king here. Hip Hop wannabees stay in North America please!

To get in the proper mood, LUFTHANSA will get you in the spirit with their efficient, severe and non nonsense Germanic style. Love the livery, yellow corporate colour and blonde german attendants! German is an unwieldy language made sexy when flying on their flag airline. "Guten Tag Meine Dame und Herren" (purrrrr).

Frankfurt is currently in a state of very un-German mess, but flight transfers are not too bad. (it still beats the pants off Heathrow and De Gaulle)Lufty flies from Toronto, Calgary and Montreal via Frankfurt everyday.

Getting around
Pretty messy but easy all the same. U BAHN is underground and S BAHN is above ground TRAINS. They will take you EVERYWHERE and its cheaper than the TTC! go figure.

Eating
Get your Wurst on pretty much everywhere, its street food and casual is all good. Lots of Turkish delights are a popular option when German food gets to be..well, you know...skip the fine dining restos. Seriously.

If you are jones-ing for something different, slightly cheesy, but totally Berlin you gotta check out WHITE TRASH FAST FOOD. Trust me - just go! Tattoos also readily available if you must...

Where to Stay?
Wanna flashback to the 1980's communist chic? (not that most of you remember it anyways) OSTEL is the answer. Pretend that your neighbour is spying on you and that the phones are bugged. Tons of communist paranoia fun!

more serious? more comfort, yet cool design can be had at a slew of Berlin Boutique hotels such as:

Drinking
The only place I drink is CSA BAR. It's appropriate for your visit this time as well, since its located in the former Czech Airlines office and retains it mid 70's Russian/Brutalist style. You might have to avoid the Wallpaper* brigade, put its a small price to pay to drink in history.

Street Style?
Berliners are poor but street style savvy, I will give them that much. Wanna see?

I was lucky enough to meet and interview the creating/writing team of DAVID HEIN and IRENE CARL during one of their Fringe rehearsals last summer, and having only seen select bits (and later the entire show), I knew instantly that it would go on to bigger and better things and now they have.

MMLJWW is now staging a run with local Toronto Theatre Producers MIRVISH at the Panasonic Theatre starting NOV 2.

We at Dead Sexy Mag very pleased and honoured to showcase the amazing work of hot designer SARAH SHELL of 442 MCADAM in the Fashion Spread of our October issue. Sarah's clutches, miniskirt and skirt bags are getting a lot of attention both in Toronto and Canada. They are hot, hot, hot!

Born and bred Western girl Sarah has recently set up shop in Toronto, yet she is currently returning to her roots by showcasing her designs at the 1st annual ALBERTA FASHION WEEK in Calgary. Sarah was kind enough to slow down enough to say hi, answer a few questions and smile to the camera!

Dead Sexy: “Where does the inspiration for you bag designs come from?”

Sarah: “442 came about to fill a desire of mine for a quality bohemian purse, one that can handle a heavy load, and all the abuse that goes along with being taken advantage of. I didn't like wearing what everyone else was wearing; I'm always hesitant to give in to trends. Something is beautiful if it's beautiful, if it grabs you as an individual, makes your heart jump - the concept of being told what is beautiful and the idea that everyone at once finds it beautiful is a concept I always understood as brainwashing. AND I didn't want a delicate flower that I'd have to break my bank account to get. I also didn't want to resort to travel/gear bags, because I didn't find them visually appealing. I was never a purse-girl, I'd grab my important cards and stuff them in my pocket, but I'd also always find that I'd
have a million things in my hands and I just wanted a hands-free alternative, but again, something that matched my style and could
handle how abusive I am to my clothes and accessories. At the same time, I was doing management consulting work on a project
researching straps. From belts to guitar slings, including rifle
slings. I was not thrilled about having to walk in to a bunch of
hunting stores, but I came across these very wonderful intricately
designed leather slings, and I thought to myself that it's a real
shame such a beautiful creation is used for a sport that has always
upset me. Thus, the first hobo bag was born, with a very attention-
grabbing sling. It was a hobby at first. A storeowner noticed it
and asked me to make some for her store. Then a Fashion Magazine writer came through the store and wrote a piece on my line, giving birth to 442 McAdam.”

Dead Sexy: “Has Calgary/ Western Canada played a major role as inspiration?”

Sarah: “Definitely. They have been so positive and encouraging, everyone from media to buyers and friends provided me with the platform and the confidence to go full-throttle on this line, I honestly couldn't have got this far without their encouragement. I am so thrilled to call Calgary home and the launching ground of 442. I think the line started with a much more western influence then it currently has but I do not attribute that to Calgary. One stereotype that Alberta, Calgary in particular, still carries is this hat'n'boot leather-clad cowboy. This is not the case. Calgary has truly been pushing forward at an amazing pace, in terms of fashion. The boutiques are incredible and popping up everywhere you look. Yes, the Stampede brings that cowboy style back on the streets, and unfortunately that one week of the year is when most people visit, so they assume this is a typical sight. It is not. Edmonton has this bohemian-punk style that is pretty wicked. Calgary is showing a real spread in fashion, they have really been embracing fashion and it's wonderful to see.”

“Alberta Fashion Week (taking place October 4-10) is an example of
this - there is a huge line-up of talented designers from Alberta
being showcased, they are really nurturing the talent there, just as
they nurtured, and continue to nurture, me and 442 McAdam. The
inspirational role that Alberta played was this opportunity to
develop the line, and the acceptance of me as a design label. These
are two things very hard to find and are the reason I am so touched
by their generosity in those ways.”

Dead Sexy: “What materials do you use? Vintage? Recycled?”

Sarah: “A lot of people ask me that. I use cowhide leather, new, and I personally choose each hide based on quality of the leather, texture, and color.”

Dead Sexy: Who is you favorite designer bags or otherwise?

Sarah: “I appreciate quality and details in most bags, I'm usually the one at the coffee shop, it looks like I'm gazing at your bum, but I'm actually looking at the details of your bag.”

Dead Sexy: “What's next for you and 442 McAdam?

Sarah: “I'm really excited about the Spring/Summer '10 collection, which is being photographed as we speak. It's a little more girly - definitely inspired by my trip to eastern Europe where I was just amazed by all these pretty girls riding their bicycles around with their striking bags draped in such a bohemian manner over their shoulder. I am presenting this collection at Alberta Fashion Week in a few weeks, and AFW is throwing a big 442 after-party on my behalf, so what I'm most looking forward to is my dirty martini at the after-party.”

“We just moved the line to Toronto about a month ago, so I'm really
looking forward to getting to know the industry here and expanding
the line in the east. I'm one of the newest members of the Toronto Fashion Incubator and The Stylebox - they have been very embracing of the line, and as a result I've had the pleasure of seeing 442 being worn by celebrities at various red-carpet events during TIFF.”

“There's been requests to bring 442 out to the US, but I want to focus on Canada right now. There are great things ahead for the
line, it's really taken on its own personality, I feel like I'm
lucky to be along for the ride.”

Dead Sexy: “Where did the name come from?

Sarah: “It's my grand-parents' address in Winnipeg. My mom grew up there, and I have spent every summer at that house. My grand-parents are survivors of the Holocaust, they immigrated to Canada and after a few years in Winnipeg, they purchased 442 McAdam, where they are still residing to this day. They are the strongest people I know and have been very supportive in every decision I've made, including deciding to enroll in fashion when I should have been applying to med schools. My oldest friend lives next door, she is also a symbol of strength to me.”

Had to put a face to our Toronto Ghost Tour... and these ones were my favs of all fav. How intense is our tour guide's gaze. I also enjoyed watching how freaked out Brit got when he showed us some door that led to some secret stairwell where some guy was murdered by some other guy. To say the least, everyone should do themselves a favour and do this ghost tour, if only to experience the intenseness that was our tour guide! Thanks Brit for letting me tag along. Sorry John Hillcoat, the book was slightly better

I TIFFed it up for Dead Sexy Magazine to go see Hillcoat’s film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s 2009 sci-fi novel "THE ROAD.” One of my pet peeves is reading a great book and then seeing a terrible adaptation of it on the big screen, which is kind of what happened with this film. I wouldn’t go so far as to say that Hillcoat’s version was in the same caliber of lets just say for instance “Time Travelers Wife” but it was a little disappointing to see that I wasn’t as enamored as I was while reading the book. The overall look of the film was definitely well done and captivating – picture an ash filled post apocalyptic world where those who survived are forced to live a life of cannibalism. Can you say haunting and…Eww! Hillcoat’s chosen cast (Viggo Mortensen as the loving father and Kody Smit-McPhee as the young boy) was equally memorable, but aside from that, there was something lacking in the overall storyline- typical of what happens when directors try to recreate the magic that comes from reading the book. I say, read the book if you haven’t already and see the film, if only for the beautiful and haunting imagery of what the end of the world might look like.

What I Wanna Be When I Grow Up...

I saw Sook Yin Lee’s “YEAR OF THE CARNIVORE” the other day and I had an epiphany when it was over: I want to be like Sammy Smalls when I grow up (the leading lady in the film played by Cristin Milioti.) I don’t mean I want to have sex with the married couple that lives next door to me in exchange for money (see film for details), but I do want to have that heartwarming quality she so pleasantly possesses in the film. Aside from the impressive cast, Sook Yin’s film was wonderful, hitting all the right notes one wants in a film. Funny? Check. Delightful? Check. Original? Double check! When Dead Sexy interviewed Sook Yin for our Sept issue she told us about what inspired her for the film. To see those inspirations pop up throughout the film and know they came from her real life experiences made the film that much more charming. Check out more of the interview that DS had with Sook Yin Lee in Dead Sexy Mag. She is a filmmaker to-be-watched most definitely!

Cheap e-reader coming soon?

Times Online reports that Asus, the manufacturer of netbooks, smartphones, mobos and other gadgets will be releasing their version of an e-reader, referred to as the Eee Reader, by later this year. That in itself isn't that remarkable however they will be bringing to market the "cheapest e-reader in the world". What's more, the device will have 2 screens with a hinge connecting them so it can be open and closed like its paper predecessor AND the screens can be used to display non-text content such as a web page. Cool! The target price will be £ $100 or under $200 CAD. Could this device hit Canadian shores? We hope so! Our Amazon Kindle lust has dwindled just a little.

Hola Dead Sexy Magazine!
Instead of cruising the Croatian islands and winding up back on Hvar, I decided to dock in Split instead, where a colleague from France was waiting to drive me down Croatia’s stunning Dalmatian coastline and into neighbouring Montenegro.
We arrived early this morning and had enough time to sip a morning cappuccino in Kotor before heading onwards to the small islet of Sveti Stefan, the jewel in Montenegro’s crown (see photo attached).
Although it is not blessed with hundreds of islands (like neighbouring Croatia), Montenegro has just about everything else – dramatic Alpine mountains, stunning coastal towns and magnificent panaoramic vista’s – all in a space about the same size of Switzerland (and the people are just as tall, good-looking and soccer crazy as the Croats!)
We had heard Crown Prince Michael was visiting, but upon inquiring in Sveti Stefan were told that as of yet nobody had seen him. Everyone was abuzz with news of the Madonna concert in neighbouring Romania and asked me if I was going to see her perform in Belgrade (would have loved too – but heading back to TO soon).
It’s getting late, and I am eager to check out the billionaire makeover that Barrick’s Gold Corp. founder - and fellow Torontonian - Peter Munk has invested in the neighbouring harbour town of Tivat. Having been born on this coast, it is amazing for me to witness the level of investment that is pumping into Croatia and Montenegro and am always pleased when Torontonians are at the forefront of the action!

Croatian Cruising - The Mediterranean as it once was!

Dead Sexy Magazine can be sure that I am not missing the lackless Toronto summer all that much as I sit in the small harbour of Komiza on the Croatian island of Vis and glance out at the azure waves of the Adriatic sea, sipping a freshly brewed espresso and watching Bill Gates' yacht cruise by. Two weeks into my Croatian and Montenegrin vacation (has it really been that long?), I am already devising a strategic "how-to-stay-here-permanently-plan" that would make even the senior agents at CSIS proud.

What's not to love?:

The People: Good-looking and well-over 6'0 tall (an average height here), all of whom (at least the one's I met), speak at least 2 foreign languages perfectly well, and who like to do nothing better than sit for hours at cafe upon cafe, dressed in their designer best as they wander up and down the quay for the evening "passegiatta/giro" all the while discussing the regular topics - where to go for another coffee, how the national football team (football being THE sport here) will perform in the World Cup qualifier vs. England (September 9 for those of you who still live in a vacuum cleaner) and oh yes, should they eat grilled fish straight from the sea tonight or roasted lamb on a spit for dinner (oh the worries..).

The Country: A stunning, unbelievable place that boasts a coastline so magnificently beautiful it can clearly rival even the best that Greece and Spain have to offer. Peppered with almost 2,000 islands set against mountains and cliffs so majestic they take your breath away, this southern-European gem is attracting Hollywood stars, jet-set celebrities (Beyonce Knowles and Jay Z visited the island yesterday) and Russian billionaires who are buying whatever they can grab - private islands included.
As I sit here waiting for the evening ferry back to the bustling port city of Split, I can't help but wonder where I will be blogging from tomorrow (my gut instinct tells me I will be back on the island of Hvar sipping a daquiri at Carpe Diem or Hula Hula bar) and more importantly, what and with whom I will be dining.

walking into the little tented square at the harbor front for the Break Beats and Culture festival last month, i arrived in the little open grassy area just in time to catch the beginning of parallels set. i sat cross legged on the ground, lit a smoke, and got out the note book. i had been hearing a lot about parallels over the last couple months since i was at nxne and they were definitely one of the big buzz bands. also, as an obvious claim to fame, the drummer cameron had been on tour the last few years with crystal castles. i listened to the myspace and really enjoyed what i was hearing; a strange mixture of that underground new york dance rock meets new order meets little itty bitty touches of the cure, depeche mode and the gossip. i was really trying to find a distinct comparison music-wise to them, but they were really in an element all their own. as holly, joey and cameron took the stage, all dressed in black, they cranked out great song after great song. it's not easy to play busy music festivals where a lot of people don't really know who you are, or care for that matter. but people stopped, paid attention and even tapped their toes. holly was reminiscent of a scenester stevie nicks in her long, sheer, flowy black dress... but she had the voice of an angel. very tight, very catchy and very awesome. after their killer set, i met up with holly for a brief but awesome chat. and what a sweetheart she was, too!

DEAD SEXY: That was an awesome set! So, tell me how Parallels came together; how did you Cameron and Joey meet?

HOLLY: Cameron and I had been friends for a few years, playing music together for fun. He had been busy the last few years touring with Crystal Castles and were just doing our own thing. We started to write Ultralight together over email and decided to start Parallels right after he quit touring with Crystal Castles. Joey, we had just known him for a long time. He's a good guy.

DEAD SEXY: Yeah I've definitely seen Cameron play with them a few times; great drummer. So, I really dug your guys tunes; I'm a huge New Order fan, and definitely felt some touches of their styles in your songs tonight. What would you say were your biggest musical influences when writing Ultralight?

HOLLY: We never really had any in mind. I mean, we all had our own things we listened to when we were growing up but we never sat and tried to pin point a certain style. When we started recording, we had used a lot of vintage equipment and anolog synths laying around, so... we got what we got!

DEAD SEXY: Ultralight, the 12 inch, was just released... what was the process like for writing and working on the album together?

HOLLY: Cameron and I wrote it. We started over email, then moved into a studio together to complete it. We recorded at this place called Marigold Studios, built in the early 80's late 70's. It was full of lots of cool equipment, and it was a lot of fun. It was very different working in the same room as apposed to over email. We had been solo artists for so long before, but it was a lot of fun.

DEAD SEXY: And with Cam being in Crystal Castles for a few years, he got to tour the world, play insane sold out shows, meet lots of cool people... I'm sure he has a lot of stories and learned a lot of good and bad lessons about being in a touring band that massive. Did he bring anything to the table from his past experiences when you all started Parallels?

HOLLY: I don't know, he would be the better one to ask, haha. I know for sure that he's exhausted! He was on tour non-stop for nearly two years, and Crystal Castles are still touring now. But being on the road, you see the world without really seeing anything at all... it's strange.

DEAD SEXY: What are the future goals for Parallels for the upcoming year?

HOLLY: We are recording and finishing up our album right now, and we hope to have it ready for the fall. We have a music video coming out as well. But mostly, we would just like to play more shows and meet more people.

DEAD SEXY: Speaking of shows, what's the worst show you guys have ever played, and the best?

HOLLY: The best was at the Steamwhistle Brewery; I don't think I have to explain why. And the worst was NXNE last month. It was total chaos; just a food court of bands, plug in and go, lots of distortion.

DEAD SEXY: Describe for me Parallels in three words.

HOLLY: Synth pop trio.

DEAD SEXY: And last but not least, what do you consider dead sexy?

HOLLY: I was going to say Michael Jackson, but that might be too literal.

DEAD SEXY: Okay then, let's just say the highest caliber of sexiness then.

HOLLY: David Bowie.

Ever since coming back from my trip to India, I've been lamenting about the lack of dosa places that could rival my experience there. Sure, places like Dosa Thali in Bloorcourt are good but they aren't great and the decor is pretty...well, let's just say traditional.

No one has taken the decor up a notch yet offer a good product. When I heard about Madras Pantry at 877 Queen St. West, I had to check it out. Madras Pantry is opened by some of the same folks responsible for Kultura & Nyood. I really like Kultura so decided it was worth giving it a try.

The place was simply and tastefully decorated with a mini electric/battery (?) powered ferris wheel in the front. Cute. You can't help but notice the ceiling height tarp drawing of a sword eater covering a good portion of the exposed brick wall. A communal wooden plank dining table took up the middle of the room. The other wall was filled with Indian spices and ingredients for sale. The kitchen and order counter are located in the back.

There were a couple of people eating at the table but it was mostly empty except for the 3 staff. They were friendly enough. We ordered a Mango Lassi, Szechuan beef dosa on recommendation from the female staff at the register and the traditional Masala dosa-all to go. The food didn't take long to arrive.

First came the Lassi. I love this stuff. Tasty and good for you... at least the yoghurt part is! The Lassi was good but it could've used a bit more tang and a tad more sugar. Comparable to what you get in the city. So far so good. I was getting excited about the dosa.

The dosas came wrapped like a burrito but with the top open. The dosa wrap looked about right but lacked the slight crispiness I'm familiar with. They looked nice with a good amount of filling. We tried the Masala dosa first (first photo of dosa). This is the most traditional of the dosa and it's entirely vegetarian. Mine came filled with potatoes, tomatoes, fresh spinach. The first few bites was pure raw garlic! Yuk! I love garlic but not like this. I threw the rest out. The Szechuan beef dosa tasted better than the Masala but only marginally. At least it didn't have the explosion of raw garlic (it took me a couple of hours to get rid of the taste). We were told that 3 sauces came with each dosas order but we couldn't find them in the brown paper bag our order came in. Where's my curry chutney?!

During my 3 weeks in India, I had dosas for breakfast almost every day so I know what they should really taste like. The stuff served at Madras Pantry doesn't even come close but they are new so maybe they will improve. For now there are better options in the city. I won't be rushing back any time soon.

So the weather in Toronto is not quite as summer as we would like. Add in all the rain, and it makes me long for a few days of lazying on a beach in the chic yet laidback beach town of Buzios, Brazil (2 hrs outside Rio de Janeiro).

Brigitte Bardot may have "discovered" the low key peninsula fishing village, however I doubt she envisioned a designer boutique hotel like INSOLITOS. Fine Design and a selection of 24 local beaches is all the reason we need to revisit this glam South American hotspot.

A Hangover, Kensington, and Some Crazies!

Sunny Sundays are meant for strolling around the city dressed in sundresses with cool shades in tow. This just past rain soaked Sunday gave me the impression that I would be staying in bed till mid-afternoon attempting to sleep off Saturday night’s wild escapades. Well, that was not to be the case as I was awoken by an early meeting call from my dear editor Tom to meet him and the crew in Kensington Market.

As most hip Torontonians know, Kensington is located in downtown Toronto and apparently it’s also where most Asian tourists flock to seek the best vintage finds while vacationing. Who knew? When I arrived on location, although drenched, it was safe to say that the stormy weather was beginning to clear. This made the Kensington vendors and myself very happy as they began to lay out their vintage goods along the sidewalk to blaring reggae tunes. As my resentment about the early morning wakeup text began to wane (I’m joking Tom) I noticed the abundance of diverse people that stood before me. Each passing block introduced new sounds, smells, and uber trendy 6 year olds, who btw, made me feel quite inadequate as far as style goes (There should really be a fashion blog solely dedicated to these kids who, lets face it, should be grateful to have cool rents that double as personal stylists…free of charge!)

Once my jealous eyes were able to re-focus, I also discovered the gnarly performers, and by that I mean bands and circus clowns alike, it was after all, the July installment of a locally organized event called “Pedestrian Sundays”. All were truly a sight for eyes and ears. My favorite in particular was the spoken word poet preaching what sounded to me like feminist jargon. I don’t know why, but every time I hear this type of art the hairs on my arm stand up, and in a good way. I couldn’t stick around long enough to hear the poet who was up next as the DSM crew was there to work and being the good assistant that I am, I had to follow suit.

When we finished shooting indoor footage for our upcoming web video, the pedestrian count outside had tripled. Uneasiness settled upon me as my senses became over stimulated all at once. I figured I needed some nourishment, which came in the form of oven-baked margarita pizza. I ain’t mad at that!

After we were all fed we checked out some of the super cool stores that are going to be covered in DSM’s August issue (lucky for you guys!) Some of my faves included Good Blood Bad Blood, an artist run shop and gallery, and Function 13, which for the record pedals stuff that you will likely not find anywhere else in the city. The endless amount of stellar books, posters and cool adult toys offered at Function 13 makes me want to give up everything I’ve worked for and spend the rest of my life being a graphic art hoarder. Seriously.

Its true that Kensington offers something for everyone and I’m not just referring to the countless vintage stores in the hood. Anything from a man on stilts performing tricks to the courageous middle aged couple doing a tango like routine in the designated “dance area”, the market is so magical, its like Neverland Ranch, except without the whole, you know, well…never mind. Words cannot express how excited I will be to return to this hood on the third Sunday of next month for yet another pedestrian Sunday. Hope you all will check it out for yourselves before summers up and don’t let the unpredictable weather and the inaccurate weathermen stop you. Sandwich Art!

As daunting as it is, what’s more rewarding than finding or making the perfect sandwich? Lucky for me, I’ve been blessed with an innate ability to make a darn good sandwich. In my university days I lost some of my, uh, creativity for crafting perfect sandwiches due to my lack of income, and sheer laziness. In an attempt to save money, my four penny-pinching roomies and I were forced to endure rationing our communal groceries, (like it was our job) ergo the lack of necessary ingredients for crafting what I would refer to as the sandwich of my dreams. Left with nothing more than the end pieces of stale wonder bread and moldy “krap” singles, I longed to return to my normal, more fulfilling sandwich eating ways.

Since then I have returned to the home front (a.k.a my folks’ place) where I have committed to over-eating in order to make up for those lost years. In the process of redeveloping my sandwich making skills, my knowledge of what makes a sandwich so wonderful has grown twofold. Amidst the plethora of people (myself not included) blogging about sandwich hotspots and the do’s and don’ts of the craft, it has become repetitive and even, dare I say, boring! That is until I came across this marvelous blog (Scanwiches.com) of “sandwich art”. Art being the operative word, at first glance my thoughts of eating them were replaced with thoughts of hanging them as artwork above my bed. The vibrant colors of poultry, layered with textures of purple glazed onions help glorify these scanned sandwich masterpieces. Its official, this blog is as good as it gets for sandwich addicts and those looking for inspiration for their next sandwich endeavor-whether its finding the new great sandwich spot in your hood or pulling yourself out of your daily sandwich making rut.

Zdenka Now! Zdenka is not funny!

So I checked out this Fringe Show a week ago and posted an informal review on this
"BLOG" after seeing this show.

Lots of people were very unhappy with my review and proceeded to attack me for bad grammar, no class, not finding this play the most amazing thing ever put on stage, and so forth.

Therefore:
For all of the complainers here is my grammatically correct ZDENKA NOW review!

Zdenka Now is presented by performer Precious Chong as a series of loosely connected, "based on reality", comedic and tragic characters that range from a native "rapper" to a hyper and latently lesbian GM Convention Sales Representative.

Quarter Chinese Ms. Chong (who has 2 half black half sisters) manages to make her characters not only not interesting, but not funny. Whenever she changes between characters a video is presented, which included a LCBO salesclerk dancing with a customer in the aisles of a LCBO Store or the car salesperson driving a car.

I am so sorry however this show was all over the place, the costume changes killed the flow and the bottom line is that having the title character Zdenka (an overly simplistic Yugo stereotype) do two exercises and grin was just not funny. The native character is presented as travelling on a bus, constantly disturbing other passengers and finally performing a rap pertaining to their origins from a reservation. Again - not funny, or amusing (at all).

Ms. Chong surely is beautiful and a vibrant performer however her show was just not entertaining or funny. Wide eyes and various accents do not a show make. This show proves that basing your show on real people doesn't make it any more interesting.

Well so far I am very happy, there are some great shows, great revelations and a few great misses.

My Recap:
The Event: Well it's crazy, but the dedicated and hardworking team of Fringe Volunteers is making it happen really well. Sure there are hiccups and such, but overall its a great job done!
congrats Fringers!

The Shows:
Overall impressed. You know how it is, some years are good, some years are bad. 2009 didn't blow my mind, but it was one of the better years so far. (and from talking to fellow fringers, they are pretty happy too!)

So far what we saw:

Quarter Life Calamity
5 buddies get together to talk life in their 20s. Humour is penis, sex, vag, gay based mostly and not terribly funny or original. Plus boo hoo, who wants to hear 20 year olds kvetch? I don't.
A Miss

Red Machine Part One
Very ambitious. Something was lost in translation. A very committed cast and crew give it their all but just cannot overcome the mess of a script. Having 3 writers in this case made the story murkier and completely unsurmountable. Supposedly something to do with the different parts of the brain (or something).

My Mother's Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding
A musical, but a good one. Folksy and very family friendly comedy based on a true story. The songs are catchy, sometimes sassy and you can feel the love all around. The "feel good" hit of the Fringe.

Peeler
First time playwright Kiran Friesen impresses against all odds. A very sexy and surprisingly touching story of a stripper's last night at the club. We have all seen Hollywood's treatment of the stripper, Peeler gets it just about right.

Moving Along
A mile a minute, frenzied comedic re-telling of a young man's turbulent life. At times funny however one man show wonder Chris Craddock has been and can do much better.

Saucy Wenches in Trenches
A cabaret style ditty featuring 2 polar opposite stage performers belting out show tunes hooked together with a super thin plotline. The talent and singing is wonderful and fun, but asking myself why the Fringe?

Zdenka Now!
The disapointment this year (for me anyways). Precious Chong has a lot of talent and is very charismatic, however this show, a loosely linked series of sketches featuring various "based on reality" characters just isn't funny, or sad or anything really.

Dirty Girls
Kat Sandler's comedy about a germophobe king is funny (and dirty). Sandler is a comedic revelation and the entire cast is very talented and zany. Fluffy but fun. You wouldn't see this show outside the Fringe!
