Fringe Review: THE RED MACHINE PART ONE

Posted by Anonymous |

OK
I am officially confused.
maybe that's what the creators had in mind?
RED MACHINE PART ONE
Checked it out last night. They are also featured in our July issue (check out our Fringe Coverage).

Anyways,

I loved the set up at the Lower Ossington Theatre (sorry no pics but I arrived late - damn that Queen Streetcar!)
It was obvious that serious attention was paid to the staging, sound design, etc..
some talented people are involved.
So how about the nitty gritty?
I have NO idea what the play is about
its basically a trio of events that seemingly happen over the span of one night (or not) in a hotel room. As Christopher Stanton mentioned to me in the interview, the themes are religion, water, memory, etc...

The acting was very committed, the entire cast seemingly believed and were invested in their characters. James Cade was the highlight in the central role with Paula Jean Prudat also impressing..

Less good was the fact that I don't think the audience is meant to "figure" out this play. Being written by 3 writers was not necessarily an advantage as they each have a voice and this leads to changes of tone constantly and this bothered me.

I know this review was totally all over, kinda like this play.
Should you check it out?
well if you like to be challenged try it out. If you are looking for a linear story with a clearcut plot this one is not for you.

Was it successful?
This play is getting a lot of hype. My final verdict is that the script is the weak link. This production has the dedicated and talented cast and great set design, now it needs a story that isn't so pretentious and all over the place.

I rate it a see only for those that like experimental theatre,
a pass for those who what to be entertained.
